Musk's Terafab plans to spend as much as $119B in Texas
Terafab is coming to Texas, and it's spending big. SpaceX plans to splash out $55 billion building a new chipmaking plant in Grimes County, according to a newly posted public notice. Elon Musk's chip-production moonshot could ultimately spend as much as $119 billion "if additional phases of the project are completed." Terafab, a joint venture between SpaceX and Tesla, aims to boost semiconductor production to a level that can one day support a terawatt of computing power annually. A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for June 3.
SpaceX Proposes Massive Semiconductor Facility in Texas
Elon Musk’s SpaceX has unveiled plans for a major semiconductor manufacturing project in Texas, proposing an initial investment of $55 billion. The facility, known as Terafab, was detailed in a filing made public on Wednesday.
The initiative is a joint effort with Tesla and reflects Musk’s broader strategy to secure internal access to advanced semiconductor technology. However, analysts suggest the scale of production outlined could ultimately require significantly more capital than initially proposed.
In parallel, SpaceX is reportedly targeting a June IPO that could value the company at approximately $1.75 trillion, underscoring the growing financial ambitions tied to its expanding operations.
Expanding AI Integration Across Musk’s Ecosystem
Musk has been increasingly aligning his companies around artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, SpaceX acquired his AI startup xAI in a move aimed at developing space-based data centers for AI processing.
The combined entity is currently valued at around $1.25 trillion, highlighting the scale of Musk’s integrated technology vision spanning space, AI, and advanced computing.
Long-Term Vision and Economic Impact
The Terafab project is expected to be developed in multiple phases, combining semiconductor fabrication with advanced computing infrastructure. If fully built out, SpaceX estimates total investment could reach as high as $119 billion.
The facility is planned for Grimes County, Texas, within a newly designated reinvestment zone. Local officials are set to review a potential property tax abatement agreement during a meeting scheduled for June.
If approved, the project could significantly boost domestic semiconductor production in the United States while reinforcing Musk’s strategy of vertical integration across his companies.
