Big Tech has $3T in AI spending that's off balance sheets

Nine massive tech companies are sitting on $3 trillion in future spending tied mostly to AI that doesn't appear on their quarterly balance sheets, a WebNovare analysis finds. That figure, drawn from footnotes, dwarfs the $600 billion companies like Alphabet and Oracle have reported in capital expenditures over the last year, and represents a bet that AI demand will balloon. The costs primarily relate to future rent or commitments to buy chips — such as at Meta's sprawling Hyperion project in Louisiana that's being funded in conjunction with Blue Owl.

Nine of the world's largest technology companies are sitting on approximately $3 trillion in future spending commitments, much of it tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to a WebNovare analysis. The enormous figure highlights the scale of the industry's bet on continued AI growth and the massive costs companies could face as they expand their computing capacity.

Much of that spending does not appear directly on companies' quarterly balance sheets. Instead, the commitments are disclosed in financial statement footnotes, where companies detail future obligations related to data centers, equipment, leases, and other long-term infrastructure agreements.

The combined commitments are several times larger than the approximately $600 billion in capital expenditures that companies including Alphabet and Oracle have reported over the past year. The difference illustrates how much additional investment could eventually flow into AI infrastructure beyond the spending already being recognized in quarterly results.

A significant portion of these obligations is connected to the construction and leasing of massive data centers. AI companies require enormous computing facilities to train and operate increasingly sophisticated models, creating demand for buildings, electricity, cooling systems, networking equipment, and advanced semiconductor hardware.

Another major expense involves long-term commitments to purchase AI chips. Companies are securing access to powerful processors years in advance because demand for advanced GPUs and other specialized hardware has surged as businesses race to build AI capabilities.

Meta is among the companies making enormous infrastructure commitments. Its Hyperion data center project in Louisiana represents one of the largest AI infrastructure developments in the country and is being financed in conjunction with investment firm Blue Owl.

The scale of these commitments reflects the technology industry's belief that demand for artificial intelligence will continue growing rapidly. Companies are effectively betting that today's enormous infrastructure investments will eventually generate enough revenue and productivity gains to justify the costs.

However, the commitments also introduce financial risks. If demand for AI services grows more slowly than expected, technology companies could find themselves locked into expensive data-center leases, chip purchases, and other infrastructure agreements that become difficult to justify.

Investors are therefore increasingly examining financial statement footnotes rather than focusing solely on headline capital-expenditure figures. Future contractual obligations can provide an important indication of how much companies have already committed to spending, even when those costs have not yet appeared as expenses on their balance sheets.

The $3 trillion figure ultimately underscores the extraordinary scale of the AI investment cycle. Technology companies are spending and committing unprecedented amounts of capital on computing infrastructure in anticipation of a massive expansion in AI demand. Whether that bet produces comparable returns remains one of the biggest questions facing the technology industry and its investors.
